Dit verhaal speelt zich af in een slaperig, zuidelijk stadje, waar een rustige legerbasis is geplaatst. De commandant van de basis, kolonel Flanders (Don Ameche), wil graag de harten winnen van de plaatselijke bevolking. Hij organiseert daarom een dansavond om het ijs te breken. Wanneer het feest echter uitloopt op een ordinaire kloppartij, verklaart de conservatieve Joe Davis (Tom Ewell) de oorlog aan het leger. Tussen de bedrijven door doet sergeant Shannon Gambroni (Tony Curtis) zijn best om de plaatselijke schoonheid Ramona (Suzanne Pleshette) te veroveren.
